Kathmandu, August 30 Media Council Bill was opened for amendment today after thematic discussion on the bill was approved by the National Assembly. The bill was tabled by the government on May 10 and allegedly has provisions that would curtail the rights of free press and press freedom.

Within 72 hours, the lawmakers should register their amendments on the provisions of the bill. The government has agreed to amend those provisions deemed to curtail the rights of free press. The government agreed to make amendments after consulting with the Federation of Nepali Journalists and opposition parties, including Nepali Congress, before taking the bill forward. Tabling the bill, Minister of Communications and Information Technology Gokul Baskota said the government would consult with all stakeholders about the provisions on imposing fines or taking action against errant mediapersons and media houses.
