My New Year's resolution had been to stop getting sucked into the misery of the world the moment I wake up.

Yet as I fumble to check the time, my phone flashes the words 'Iran' and 'assassination'.

My heart misses a beat as for a moment I am no longer on the pull-out sofa bed in my father's study in Dublin but back in Tehran.

Visiting my family used to be considerably more traumatic though it has never been dull.
