The newly appointed RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das tried to mend relationship with the government in his first media interaction after the appointment on Wednesday. The former economic affairs secretary said there should be a free and fair discussion between the government and the RBI. “We must have stakeholder consultation with everybody.

The government is not just a stakeholder, it runs the economy and the country,” he said. Das further said he will try to uphold autonomy and core values of the central bank. “I will try to uphold autonomy and credibility of the RBI as an institution.

Will take time for me to settle down and look at all issues,” said Das. The RBI will hold the meeting of its board as planned on December 14, he added. On inflation, Das said outlook is fairly benign, but the central bank needs to be careful. On Viral Acharya's speculated exit, Das quipped: "I just had tea with the RBI Deputy Governor.

He is still with the RBI." Das was named the 25th governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to succeed Urjit Patel, who quit abruptly on Monday amid a bitter dispute over the regulator’s autonomy.

The appointment means that the central bank will once again be headed by a former Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer.

Patel, who had said he was resigning for personal reasons, and his predecessor Raghuram Rajan are economists, ET reported.
