Chinese climbers scale Mt Everest, to install weather station at 8,800m

KATHMANDU, May 4A group of Chinese climbers scaled Mt Everest from the Tibetan side this morning aiming to conduct the
scientific research on roof of the world, reports said.China Global Television Network reported that the Chinese scientific expedition
"Earth Summit Mission 2022" successfully summited Mt Qomolangma on Wednesday, with the first batch of the team members arriving at the
summit at 12:22 p.m
local time
"The mission made its first breakthrough above 8,000 meters and will conduct a comprehensive scientific research operation at the summit,"
CGTN report added. Xinhua News Agency reported that Chinese scientists aimed to establish a meteorological monitoring
station at an altitude of 8,800 metres on Mt Everest, the world's highest peak, on the China-Nepal border."If the station is established
successfully, it will replace the one at an altitude of 8,430 meters set up by the British and US scientists on the south side of the
mountain in 2019, to be the world's highest of its kind, reports quoted the Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research (ITP), Chinese Academy of
Sciences, as saying.According to Xinhua, three meteorological stations were established at 7,028 metres, 7,790 metres and 8,300 metres,
respectively, earlier this year on the north side of the mountain, bringing the total number of operational weather stations between the
altitudes between 5,200 metres and 8,300 metresmetres to seven
Last year, four stations at sea levels of 6,500 metres, 5,800 metres, 5,400 metres and 5,200 metres were set up.Earlier, reports claimed
that a commercial team with 20 Tibetan climbers and 11 clients outfitted by Yarla Shampo Expedition successfully summited Mt Everest from
the north side on April 30.
