Facebook's big F8 2018 developer conference came and went without a mention of the next-gen Oculus Rift headset, though the company did launch the new standalone Oculus Go headset on May 1. While we didn't hear so much as a peep about the Oculus Rift 2 during F8, Facebook CTO Mike Schroepfer did tease that we're in for "exciting updates" related to Project Santa Cruz later this year.
He also announced the headset has been sent to third-party developers, a clear sign the Project Santa Cruz release date is drawing nearer. The standalone Oculus Go price is $199 / $199 / AU$299 for the 32GB edition.
Project Santa Cruz's price is currently unknown, but chances are it will be more expensive than the current Oculus Rift. Oculus Go standalone headsetWhere that leaves Oculus Rift 2 is a mystery, should the headset be a different device than Project Santa Cruz.
Like we said, it probably won't be that much more expensive than the first Oculus Rift, but it will cost more. As for its competitors, it's also unknown how much the HTC Vive Pro will cost.
It's price could also be a factor in the Oculus Rift 2's pricing.
