KATHMANDU, DECEMBER 10The Department of Environment has imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 each on 12 loud exhaust bikes, as per the Environment Protection Act, 2019.

Vehicles failing emission test penalised
Of 29 such motorcycles detained and handed over by traffic police to the department recently to test their noise emission, the owners of 12 bikes were slapped hefty fine.
SSP Rajendra Prasad Bhatta, Spokesperson at Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office, said investigation into 17 loud exhaust bikes were under way.During the test, the sound levels of some bikes were over 110 decibel (dB) against the permissible limit of 84 dB.
Traffic police have continued action against persons riding such bikes in Kathmandu valley.According to KVTPO, this crackdown follows complaints of terrorising road users from valley denizens against such two-wheelers.Silencers of most fancy motorcycles were found to have been modified in violation of the existing law.
Traffic police can bring to book the modified bikes, but not in the case of persons riding two-wheelers whose silencers are fixed by the company, as per their cubic capacity.However, the authorities may decide to prohibit entry of such bikes inside the prescribed areas.A version of this article appears in the print on December 11, 2022, of The Himalayan Times.
