RAJBIRAJ, DECEMBER 20Tension ran high at Saptari's Rupani after a tipper mowed down a girl student returning home on her bicycle this morning.

Irate locals, students and relatives burned tyres at various places and staged protests.
Vehicular movement along the East-West Highway at Rupani section was obstructed following the accident.
Police fired more than a dozen tear gas shells and shot in the air to bring the situation under control.
Rupani Rural Municipality Chairman Dinesh Kumar Yadav said that Rita Kumar aged 12, daughter of Shankar Yadav, lost her life after a tipper hit the bicycle she was riding.
Her father is employed abroad.A sixth grader at Rayapur Higher Secondary School, Rita died on the spot.
Following the incident, locals and students hit the street and staged protests against her death.DSP Naresh Kumar Singh said that police opened 13 rounds of fire in the air and eight rounds of tear gas shells to disperse the mob and take the situation under control.Police have nabbed driver Bhupal Chaudhary and seized the tipper.Locals said two protesters Santosh Yadav and Shrawan Yadav, injured in the incident, were undergoing treatment at Unique Hospital.
Agitators, deceased's family members, local political parties' representatives, and police officials have reached agreement after three hours of talks.Irate locals and students stopped the protest programme after police administration pledged to address the demands of agitators after an all-party meeting.A version of this article appears in the print on December 21, 2022, of The Himalayan Times.
