Lalitpur Metropolitan City, in a bid to make people aware about various kinds of disasters, has brought into operation Mitra Disaster Risk Reduction Learning Centre at Chakupat, Lalitpur.
The centre was jointly inaugurated by LMC Mayor Chiri Babu Maharjan and Masamichi Saigo, ambassador of Japan to Nepal, yesterday.
The centre will share information about disaster preparedness, ideas for remaining safe during various kinds of disasters and what kind of disasters are common in which parts of the country.
The centre will share information largely about major kinds of calamities common in the country, such as earthquake, flooding, landslide, wind storm and infernos.
It will also impart knowledge on how to provide basic health care services and rescue victims in various kinds of disasters.
It will also provide a brief history of various kinds of disasters that had hit the country in the past.
The centre will provide classes to school children and teachers, locals, government and non-government bodies and private organisations who wish to participate in the learning process.
Mayor Maharjan said during the inauguration that the centre would be largely beneficial as it would create disaster preparedness plans.
&We have also created ward-level disaster management fund, which will be helpful in treating people who suffer due to various kinds of disasters.&
Japanese Ambassador Saigo said the centre would help by teaching techniques for saving lives during disasters and thus would reduce loss in disasters.
The centre was built with the support of City Net, an organisation of local governments and stakeholders in Asia Pacific region, Japan International Cooperation Agency, Plus Art and Toshiba Foundation.
