Running Win10 version 1803 or 1809? You have options. Herehow to control your upgrade.

The older versions of Windows 10 are growing long in the tooth. Microsoft officially released its last cumulative update for Win10 version 1803 (Home or Pro editions) on Nov. 12. Itscheduled to kill off Win10 version 1809 on May 12 of next year. If you currently run either 1803 or 1809 you should think hard about moving on to one of the next versions, either 1903 or 1909. The good news is that you can control your future version.

If you leave your version migration up to Microsoft, you&ll get pushed, ready or not. Fortunately, there are relatively easy ways to take matters into your own hands— yes, even for Win10 Home customers.

Why isn't Apple (yet) supporting Tim Berners-Lee to 'save the web'?

Apple isn&t (yet) among the signatories for a global campaign to save the web launched by Tim Berners-Lee.

I hope this is something the company plans to change.

Berners-Lee, inventor of the web, is concerned that the web is becoming a forum for political manipulation, fake news, privacy violations and other harms that he fears may plunge us all into what he calls &digital dystopia."

Helaunched a new global action plan and is asking governments, companies and individuals to commit to protecting the web and ensuring it benefits humanity.

&The power of the web to transform peoplelives, enrich society and reduce inequality is one of the defining opportunities of our time,& he said.

Food fight: Slack and Microsoft trade barbs, sling stats in collaboration app battle

Competition between Slack and Microsoft over their respective chat apps has intensified recently, as the two companies clash over new usage stats — with Slackshare price tumbling last week in the wake of new adoption figures for Teams.

Even so, analysts say Slackstickiness and strong user engagement offer it an advantage as businesses begin to adopt workstream collaboration software more widely.

Microsoft last week announced that Teams now has 20 million daily active users, up more than 50% from 13 million in June. The publication of those user figures appeared to have an immediate impact on Slackshare price, which saw an 11% drop the following day. In fact, Slackshare price has fallen by more than halfsince its public listing in June — an apparent sign of investor concern over its ability to compete with Microsoft long-term.

Shake and bake

This pilot fish gets assigned to accounting just as client/server is coming in, and he finds that teaching desktop computing to a lot of gray-hairs requires plenty of patience — and the occasional practical joke.

One day, one of the most senior accountants calls fish over and complains that one of the in-house-designed accounting apps isn&t working on her PC. Fish asks her to step through the process of using the program, all the while uttering soothing assurances that she can&t break anything, and all problems can be fixed.

All goes well until the monitor seems to freeze, which fish knows is just what happens when the program is conducting database queries. But the freeze-up soon challenges the userpatience. &See?& she declaims. &I told you this dumb thing was broken. Itnot doing anything!&
